Stolpman Syrah Santa Ynez Valley 2005
2005 Stolpman Estate Syrah 93 Pts W.A. The 2005 Syrah Estate, which has some Grenache in it and even smells like some Viognier could also be in there given the floral aromatics, has loads of plum, cassis, and blackberry fruit mixed with hints of charcoal and burning embers. This wine has luscious fruit, a sumptuous attack and mid-palate, and is an undeniably sexy wine with low acidity, ripe tannin, and a beautiful mouthfeel. This is a California Wine.
Delicious! Very floral on the nose and in the palate, making is a pretty wine, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's bereft of all the great sumptuous qualities a good wine possesses. This has it. Fantastic and the winner of today's tasting in my opinion. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 10/24/09
Decanted 30 minutes. Wow. Have tried the 2004 and it was impressive. The 2005 still seems a bit young, but decanting did wonders. Color is dark, dark purple, almost black. No light penetrates. Nose of blackberries and smoke, possibly some sort of flower...violets? Lots of dark berry and chocolate on the palate with a long, smokey finish. This one just coats the mouth in flavor! One of my favorite syrahs, ever. Outstanding - 95 points.
First taste from the bottle: Very dark maroon color, with direct light barely able to penetrate. Nose of smoke, dark berry fruits, and earth. Delicious flavors of smoked meat, sour berry, and earth. Still a bit tannic. Hoping the decant helps the tannins to integrate. A bit young I think. The 2004 was much more approachable. Will let sit in decanter and report back in several hours. Intial rating: Outstanding - 92 points.Day 2: Decided to let this one go a whole day. The earthiness has now blown off, replaced by incredibly rich and juicy blackberry fruit. The smoke component is still there, and adds to this wine's mouthwatering flavor. Tannins have integrated much better with the acid and fruit, making this wine unbelievable! WOW. Upping my initial 92 rating to Outstanding - 95+ points!
Blue and black berry fruit, with some smoked meat and pepper. Coming together a bit better than the last bottle I opened. Outstanding syrah!
