Full malo 100% new oak, 100% Roussanne fermented in new wood Sort of tropical on the nose with a bit of guava floating around here which is joined by smoky oak, polleny floral notes, with hints of tobacco and deep ripe pineapple base note. Weighty and deep on the palate, this retains fine acid balance, turning deep and nutty with ripe quince jelly flavors of the midpalate leading to a long spiced finish that shows fine minerality. Silky, smooth, and oily through the backend this ends with a moderately long finish cut with attractive minerality. Probably will improve in the bottle. 90pts

I greatly enjoyed this wine on its own, but one evening when I was entertaining guests I served fresh pineapple as a pre-dinner appetizer. When we returned to drink the L'Avion, it was simply astounding. This wonderful wine after eating fresh pineapple made the evening memorable. I will always use this pairing.

The 2006 L'Avion, a blend of 90% Roussanne and 10% Viognier, is even better than the 2007. A full-bodied, dry white offering copious quantities of honeysuckle, and a hint of that petroleum/terroir-like character that one finds in a late harvest wine ... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Winemaker's Notes:

Roussanne is definitely sympatico with the Stolpman Estate. Between Ruben's exceptional farming of these vines and their placement in both the cooler Western and lower parts of the vineyard, our Roussanne ripens perfectly in a gradual and gentle fashion. We regularly harvest the Roussanne at Stolpman with lower potential alcohols than our Syrahs, usually in the month of November. Fermented with indigenous yeast, in 100% new puncheons, the 2010 L'Avion spent 12 months in oak on lees and 3 months in tank before bottling. Figs, melons, honey, beeswax, and jasmine tea burst from the glass, with hints of blood orange in the subtle flavors. The mouthfeel of the L'Avion is one of its hallmarks and the 2010 is extravagantly textured with a long clean finish.
