Our iconic winery is perched high above the town of Calistoga on a mid-valley hill. Its stark architectural beauty, state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and panoramic views of Napa Valley from the rooftop deck have attracted visitors from all 50 states for over 30 years.
Very nice blend. Nice finish with a bit of spice to add to the black fruit flavors.
A pleasant wine that offers some structure from the blend and overtones of black raspberry and currants. Very smooth with some tannic grip on the medium length finish. A nice wine for the sub $10 price, but I can't believe the 98 point rating advertised at Cost + stores. A 90 point effort at best - just not remarkable enough to score higher.
nothing great here, but nothing that bad - nice flavors of cherry, chocolate - some cedar - kinda thin
This has to be one of the best for this price point. The berry nose turns into a blackberry extravaganza, which finishes off quite smooth. This goes well with lighter dishes, particularly in the winter, but also makes nice sipping wine.
An excellent value with black raspberry an current overtones. A smooth finish with a bit of apricot at the end. A very drinkable wine with dinner or with a group of good friends.
Full bodied good finish
Two and a half glasses
External Reviews for Sterling Merlot Vintner's Collection
Plum, currant and chocolate flavors have good depth, with lingering herbal and toasty oak notes underscored by firm structure. Drink now through 2007.
Shows concentrated aromas of black cherry, ripe juicy plums, dark chocolate, vanilla and lightly toasted oak. Equally focused flavors of jammy red fruit and ripe cherries and root beer, with a lingering finish of chocoalte-dipped cherries and sweet oak.
A dark, earthy wine that will suprise you. The rich, deep flavors of spiced plum, blackberry and mocha last through the lingering finish. Fully dry, it also has some sturdy tannins that will stand up well to roast meats.
Zesty but lean in style, with dried cherry and roasted sage aromas that lead to modest red currant and spicy herb flavors. Drink now through 2013.
Straightforward, with pleasant raspberry and green tea notes, it strikes a good balance between sweet fruit and juicy acidity.
Food Pairings for Sterling Merlot Vintner's Collection
Our 2008 Merlot combines the classic offerings of this varietal in a smooth, complex, fruit-intensive style. Bright aromas of black cherry and plum hold through the senses as they join ripe, chewy tannins on the palate. The fruit is complemented by ample caramel, mocha and toasty oak from extensive aging in new American oak barrels. With layered depths and silky body, this versatile wine is appropriate for many occasions, as a stand-alone sipper or paired with a variety of dishes, including roasted chicken, pasta or pork.

This medium-bodied wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (57%), Merlot (37%), Cabernet Franc (3%), Petit Verdot (2%), and Malbec (1%). Seth of Seth’s Humidor observes “aromas of raspberries and dark chocolate,” as well as “notes of vanilla, chocolate, blackberries and raspberries” on the palate.
