Ste. Chapelle Winemaker Riesling 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 vintage enjoyed a balanced growing season with plenty of good weather, which allowed us to pick our Riesling grapes at full maturity. The juice is cold-fermented until just the right amount of sugar has been converted to alcohol, then racked and filtered to leave the desired amount of residual sweetness. Our Riesling is lower in alcohol than typical table wines, because a portion of the grape sugar is left unfermented.

In 1971 the first experimental vinifera vineyards were planted in Idaho by Symms Fruit Ranch, a family-owned fruit producer mainly growing apples and peaches. It is a viticulture rule of thumb that any area that can grow peaches can also grow premium vinifera wine grapes. Today, Ste. Chapelle produces award-winning Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, and Syrah from the finest Idaho vineyards. Riesling was the first wine produced by Ste. Chapelle from Idaho grapes, soon followed by Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Gewürztraminer. Riesling was Ste. Chapelle's first success due to the great, cool growing conditions for the grape. Ste. Chapelle found continued success with their first vintage of Chardonnay, soon followed by 25 acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1986. Ste. Chapelle constantly continues to explore and expand Idaho's wine-growing horizons. Read less

Tasting Notes:

Our 2009 Riesling has aromas and flavors of lemon and fig, with a strong floral component. The wine is finished in the medium-sweet range and balanced with ample acidity.
