Ste. Chapelle Riesling Ice Wine Reserve Series 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Idaho provides the perfect conditions for superb ice wine: sufficient warmth to ripen the grapes and cold enough weather right after harvest to freeze them on the vine. Making ice wine is an arduous process in which frozen clusters of super-ripe grapes are gently pressed, yielding a lush nectar. Production is limited as each grape provides only a few drops of concentrated sweetness. Ste. Chapelle began producing ice wine in 1998 and quickly gained a national reputation for this rare dessert wine. Today, we offer Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc ice wines, all of which have won “Best of Class” or “Best of Show” honors.

In 1971 the first experimental vinifera vineyards were planted in Idaho by Symms Fruit Ranch, a family-owned fruit producer mainly growing apples and peaches. It is a viticulture rule of thumb that any area that can grow peaches can also grow premium vinifera wine grapes. Today, Ste. Chapelle produces award-winning Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, and Syrah from the finest Idaho vineyards. Riesling was the first wine produced by Ste. Chapelle from Idaho grapes, soon followed by Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, and Gewürztraminer. Riesling was Ste. Chapelle's first success due to the great, cool growing conditions for the grape. Ste. Chapelle found continued success with their first vintage of Chardonnay, soon followed by 25 acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted in 1986. Ste. Chapelle constantly continues to explore and expand Idaho's wine-growing horizons. Read less
