Starry Night Winery Alexander Valley Old Vine Zinfandel Nervo Station Vineyard 2007

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark, creamy blackberry fruit is accented by top notes of licorice and smoke. This has a distinct caramel oak note running through it, as well giving the nose a rather patisserie quality to it. Seamless in the mouth, this is wonderfully well balanced with good acidity that slips by almost unnoticed and tannins that are merely a frame for the lovely fruit. This is full of creamy black cherry and blackberry fruit with a hint of strawberry thrown in for good measure. Big enough but bright and transparent at the same time. Simply wonderful fruit and excellent balance with a succulent, spicy, slightly stemmy finish. The stemmy/floral quality gains in intensity, adding attractive complexity. 92pts

In 2009, Starry Night Winery celebrates its tenth anniversary as a bonded winery! At Starry Night Winery, our goal is to produce the finest wines possible that accentuate the regions from where the grapes are best grown. We currently produce Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandels from the Russian River Valley, a Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley, Zinfandel from Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley as well as Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Rhone varietals from the Lodi appellation. This year we will be releasing our first vineyard designated Zinfandel from Nervo Station Vineyard in Alexander Valley. The grapes for this wine come from two blocks planted in 1896. In our first year we produced fewer than 1200 cases. Since then we have grown a bit each year and have leveled off our production to about 14,000 cases. Most of our wines are produced in quantities of less than 1,000 cases. By keeping our production small, we are able to pay attention to every detail in the winemaking process and allow the grapes to fully express their terroir. We would describe our winemaking style as minimalist in that we want the wines to make themselves with as little intervention as possible. Read less
