Staniford Great Southern Reserve Chardonnay 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Michael Staniford has been making wine in the Great Southern region since 1995 and in that time has worked with grapes from all over southern Western Australia and with all the major varieties, and is well known for the finely structured and elegant wines that he has made for brands such as Alkoomi, Castle Rock and Old Kent River, to name a few. With this extensive experience he came to the conclusion that it was the Great Southern that had the most potential for growing outstanding fruit that would make complex wines with similar attributes to the great wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux from France. The Staniford Wine Company was established by well known Australian Winemaker Michael Staniford in the cool climate Great Southern wine region of Western Australia and produces the Staniford Great Southern Reserve Chardonnay and Great Southern Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. The wines are from mature individual vineyards specifically chosen for their ability to produce varietally faithful world class styles. The Chardonnay comes from the Albany sub-region the cool climate moderated by the maritime influence of the Southern ocean ideally suited for even ripening. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Mount Barker sub-region, further inland with much higher diurnal temperature fluctuation, allowing a slower ripening later in the season for maximal flavour accumulation. The wines are made using traditional & modern techniques and are fermented and matured in the highest quality French oak barrels. They are complex and elegant wines quite European in style. Tasting Notes:

It is fine and elegant with opulent citrus and exotic fruit with creamy, nutty complexity coming from fermentation and maturation on yeast lees for 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new. A lovely wine to drink in its youth but 4-5 years bottle age will allow more richness and depth to develop.
