Staniford Great Southern Reserve Chardonnay 2010
Michael Staniford has been making wine in the Great Southern region since 1995 and in that time has worked with grapes from all over southern Western Australia and with all the major varieties, and is well known for the finely structured and elegant wines that he has made for brands such as Alkoomi, Castle Rock and Old Kent River, to name a few. With this extensive experience he came to the conclusion that it was the Great Southern that had the most potential for growing outstanding fruit that would make complex wines with similar attributes to the great wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux from France. It is fine and elegant with opulent citrus and exotic fruit with creamy, nutty complexity coming from fermentation and maturation on yeast lees for 10 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new. A lovely wine to drink in its youth but 4-5 years bottle age will allow more richness and depth to develop.
