Last night we had this with dinner and did it ever impress all. Lots of depth to the wine and great flavors just paired well with our steaks. A can't miss wine.
I was offered this wine at a restaurant in Hawaii. I loved it! It was great before the meal and right into the meal. I purchased this wine upon returning home, and thoroughly enjoyed it a second time!
Tannic, acidic, not overly complex. Red fruit.
A decent Napa Syrah. Obviously a bit more fruit up front, less pepper. It needs a while to open up - probably an hour for a buttery/oaky finish. A good bottle, but not exactly worth it's pricetag.

A terrifically interesting and tasty wine, dense and full-bodied. It's fillled with blackberry, cherry and peppery flavors that are generously oaked. The tannins are big and thick, but sweet, so you can enjoy this puppy tonight. But it will age and improve through the decade.
And the Oscar for the darkest wine of the year goes to... Stag's Leap! Black as a moonless midnight, and one whiff sends you to heaven. Plums, blackberries, oak, all the right stuff. Sheer lusciousness, big, rich, and unctuous, fruity, rich and dry. Terrific now with game and roasts, but you can age it forever.
This classic Stag's Leap Winery Petite Sirah is dark, rich and peppery, with intense yet supple black pepper, black currant, and spice flavors that are well-focused. Finishes with a broad, complex aftertaste. Drinkable now, but sure to hold through 1998.
Long before the boom in "Pet," Stags' Leap was committed to it. And few wineries have performed more consistently over the years. The '03, from the winery's old estate vineyard exhibits dark, dry, rich, robust characteristics. It's a flamboyant, plummy-leathery wine that never loses control.
Dark crimson-purple. Medium-bodied. Moderately extracted. Quite tannic. Blackberry, mint, anise. Solid, well gripped and dry through the finish. Rich blackberry and anise flavors show through, giving this a sense of proportion and balance.
Tightly wound, with a dense, tannic core of meaty, beefy, gamy Syrah flavors. Definitely needs cellaring with its wall of tannins. Best from 2004 through 2012.
Wine Tasting NotesThe rich aromatics of this wine include ripe black fruit, black currants, cocoa and hints of vanilla. On the palate, blackberry, black plums integrate with back notes of maple syrup, creme brulee, and hints of earth, to introduce a very full and voluptuous mouthfeel. With classic Petite Syrah tannin structure, this wine finishes with a long, chewy bitter-chocolate finish.

The 70-year old Petite Syrah vineyards located in front of the Manor House on the Estate's deep, rocky soils contribute to this blend, together with fruit from our Petite Syrah partner growers up and down the Napa Valley. Each year, Winemaker Kevin Morrisey creates a wine that reflects the property's ongoing commitment to this varietal by combining this diversity into a classic and complex blend.The 2005 vintage in Napa Valley will be remembered as one of the longest and coolest growing seasons of memory. With an early bud break, the vines were off to a healthy start as the remainder of spring turned cool and wet. The summer months were mild with no real heat spikes, and the even emperatures gave us healthy vines. Crop-reduction was the key in 2005, and we made many passes through the vineyards, dropping fruit to produce the small, intense, beautiful berries we like to see at harvest.Always hand picked, the fruit started to arrive at the winery in early September. Fermentation took place in a combination of open-and closed-top fermenters, allowing us all the tools to maximize the concentration and extraction of the final blend. Before beginning the aging process, Kevin put together the final blend of Petite Syrah, Syrah, Grenache and Viognier. Doing so allows the wine to come together in symmetry as it ages in small oak barrels for eighteen months. Rich aromatics of ripe blueberry, blackberry, and cocoa together with a floral back note are the introduction to this expressive Petite Syrah. On the palate, ripe black fruit, espresso, spice and mocha commingle to create a luscious and balanced wine that features structured tannins and juicy, berry flavors to the end.
