Stag's Leap Merlot Napa Valley Merlot 2007
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is considered one of Napa Valley's first-growths. We were founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and are best known for our estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons — CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, our wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.
Utterly perfect. Just the right balance. Goes well with everything.
Good concentrated flavors. Well structured with ripe fruits and a good amount of acidity. Dark fruits (cherry maybe), graphite is predominant as an aroma and in your mouth. I'm drinking in May 2011 and I think it could use a little time but after the first glass I decanted the rest of the bottle. It definitely improved with air from decanting. I wouldn't necessarily call this a best buy at this price point (~$50-60) but it is a reliable winemaker that won't disappoint.
Wine was ok. Probably needed more than the 1hr decant time that was recommended. I rate it a $30 bottle. Have to desire to purchase another anytime soon. Bought Fay recently to see if any better.
Bottle from vv. full bodied flavor, smokey and fruity.
A very different wine with primarily graphite and oak on the nose and a strong spice finish. I was dissapointed when I popped and poured but after an hour of decanting this wine really came alive. I had it with an indian lamb dish and it was the perfect compliment.
Four and a half glasses

WE 94pts. - According to the Wine Enthusiast: Here s a Cab to put in the cellar. It s big and rich and frankly sensational, just massive in blackberries, currants and sweet dark chocolate. The tannins are fierce, but very fine, and the overall balance is impeccable. Too astringent now, even with decanting, but should easily improve in the bottle throughout the next decade. Benchmark Napa Valley Cabernet from the outstanding 2007 vintage. Winemaker Notes - Artemis, named after the Greek goddess of the hunt, is a wine that truly reflects its name. It's the culmination of Winemaker Nicki Pruss' search for superior-quality Napa Valley grapes which, when combined with estate-grown fruit, meld into a Cabernet Sauvignon that mirrors the depth, structure and elegance of our limited-production estate wines...
You might want to age this for a couple years, because it's a little tough in tannins, more so than you might expect from a Napa Merlot. But it's very rich in cherry, red currant, green olive and oak flavors. - S.H. Soft and sleek, with appealing notes of red currant, mint and fresh earth. Drink now through 2016. 3,034 cases made. -TF Intense and complex fruit aromas of cherry, red plum, and pomegranate, with notes of cigar box, cardamom, and toasted oak lead to an equally complex palate and refreshingly brisk finish. The flavors mirror the aromas, with additional notes of chocolate, vanilla and dark spice. The tannins are supple yet have good grip, suggesting that this Merlot be served with hearty, meaty dishes such as rack of lamb, cherry-sauced duck, or a mushroom and herb ragout over polenta. - WineryAppellation: Napa ValleyBlend:95% Merlot5% Cabernet SauvignonBarrel Aging: 15 months, 31% new French oak 69% previously filled French oakAlcohol: 14.5%pH: 3....
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and owner Warren Winarski can arguably claim to have put Napa Valley wines on the world map. It was exactly 25 years ago this month when Stag's Leap Cabernet won the famous Judgment in Paris Tasting in May 1976, beating out the best classified Bordeaux made the world stop and look to Napa Valley. 25 Years later they're still producing some of the best wines in the world. The quality and character of the Stag's Leap wines also lead to the Stags Leap District being granted AVA status. That quality carries through their entire line and shows through in Artemis, their Napa Valley Cab that's a blend of estate grapes from Fay, SLV and Arcadia vineyards with grapes from other top quality Napa growers. 92% Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 8% Merlot. The wine is aged 18 months in French oak barrels, one third new. A 94 point Cellar Selection in Wine Enthusiast Magazine, the review reads "Here's a Cab to put in the cellar. Winemaker's notes: The Stags' Leap Napa Valley Merlot signature brambly character is evident among black fruit that is enhanced by a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. On the nose, clove, spice and chocolate prevail over black plum aromas. Balanced and complex, Malbec adds structure to this wine featuring a juicy mid palate and rich mouthfeel.
