Harvest Dates: September 11 - 16, 2002 Fermentation: 100 % Barrel Fermentation Barrel Aging: 10 months Oak: French oak - 70% new, 30% one-year-old Blend: 100% Chardonnay, Estate Grown Alcohol: 14.6% Cases: 960 "The 2002 Staglin Chardonnay once again embodies the distinctive qualities of our vineyard: focused fruit aromas combined with elegance, balance and finish. The 2002 growing season saw fairly moderate temperatures until September, when a prolonged heat spike caused the grapes to ripen quickly. Picking at night helped us maintain the freshness and delicacy of the fruit. The grapes were gently lowered into the press for whole cluster pressing. Long, cool fermentation in French oak barrels enabled us to capture more of the grapes’ personality. Aging sur-lie and stirring of the lees added richness and balance. The fruit character and precision acid balance is further maintained in the wine by inhibiting malolactic fermentation. Aromas of fig, honeysuckle and ripe pear dominate the nose marrying well with a toasty oak character. The palate explodes with baked apple, lemon and citrus flavors followed by nutmeg and vanilla. Six distinct clones add depth and complexity to the wine. This wonderfully crafted Chardonnay can be enjoyed now or aged for an additional 3-5 years."
