Food Pairings for Staatsweingut Freiburg Muller-Thurgau Spatlese
For such a good year, this 2003 wine from Baden is lacking fruit. This spatlese is made in a drier style but is probably 1% RS. Its 12% alc indicates an attempt to keep it on the dry side. It is more Burgundian than German. Although acceptable as a Burgundian style wine, it lacks the classic German mineral and aromatic perfume that make German wine so appealing. For the consumer that wants this style, try Monterey California Chardonnay. For German winemakers to try and force their wines into a style that is popular and ignoring their tradition, is foolish. There is a good reason why German wines have the reputation they do; it was not established with trocken/halbtrocken wines but with botrytis complexity, rich fruit and residual sugar. Slightly floral nose, simple, lacks acid. My rating 83.
