St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Kabinett Ockfener Bockstein 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is such a great value, full of floral and mineral tones that add depth and complexity to the succulent lime and Asian pear toned fruit. It's a real kabinett, light and airy with just a touch of sweetness backed up by big, juicy acids that drive the finish. The balance here is really almost perfect for a wine of this weight and while this is not the most complex, nor age-worthy style of Riesling, it is absolutely delicious. 90pts

Although vineyards had belonged to the Weis family for centuries, Nicolaus Weis (vintage 1905, Nik Weis' grandfather) founded the winery in 1947. In the early years he built cellars and winery buildings on a hill on Leiwen's periphery. He named his estate for the patron saint of German winemakers, St. Urban, and 'hof' (the German word for 'estate'), St. Urban's Estate. In the 1960s his son, Hermann, assumed management of all operations. During Hermann's tenure the nursery expanded to become one of Germany's largest. He established himself as a world-recognized vine breeder, especially noted for his work with Riesling. At the beginning of the 1970s he pioneered the use of this noble variety in Canada greatly contributing to the introduction of vitis vinifera into this country still new to quality winemaking. He planted the first large parcel of Riesling vines in the Niagara Peninsula under the title of St. Urban Vineyard, later to become Vineland Estates Winery. Hermann was always interested in, and so kept his canny eye cocked towards, purchasing top Mosel vineyards. In 1989 he purchased some of the Mosel and Saar's top sites in the high-level villages of Piesport, Ockfen, and Wiltingen. Together with his wife Ida, a daughter of the Saar, he extended his vineyard area to the relatively expansive 33 hectares (approx. 82 acres). In 1997, their son, Nik(olaus) joined the winery. Father and son together restructured the vineyard holdings by selling off those of lesser quality and acquiring further parcels of greater quality. 2004 heralded another expansion for the Weis family with Nik's marriage to Daniela who added to the family's holdings with her's of the Mehringer Blattenberg. Nik and Daniela's family today includes their small children Nic(olaus) and Clara. Read less

This reliable Mosel has interesting gasoline and citrus notes on the nose, a beautiful, clear lemon-lime colour and warm, slightly off-dry baked apple or even apple cider on the palate. There is even a toasted coconut element - which is intriguing and not out of place. Delicious and recommended - especially at this price. Will age another several years at least. 90 points.

A very pleasant Riesling, fresh to the palate and best served at 61 degrees.

I rarely buy more than one bottle of ANY wine even if it's great...I've now bought 4 bottles of this riesling...this wine distinguishes the difference between one note american riesling (which should never be rated over an 89) and true German rieslings which are symphonies of fruit...this wine is just a mouthful of fruit...a super riesling at a very reasonable price.

The WS review says it well: a real mouthful of peach, apricot, and lime, and an intriguing creamy texture on the tongue. More than off-dry, this vintage is halfway to sweet, even though it's been taken to 8% alcohol (per the label). I'm enjoying it all by itself, but it should go really well with mild-to-sharp cheeses, and spectacularly well with a nice brie.

Aromas and flavors of apple, cherry and white plum are concentrated and full of fresh-crushed shiso leaf and basil notes. Golden raisin and honeysuckle details chime in on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2020.

Very clear, pure, fresh and spicy on the nose, the 2012 Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett reveals floral aromas of white peaches, lemons and brown sugar. Nicely juicy and piquant on the palate, this is a stimulating, salty and tension-filled Riesling, clear, lean and electrifying.

Yeasty fermentative notes on the nose of Weisrsquo;s 2008 Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett reluctantly recede to reveal site-typical orange blossom and apple. This is certainly a genuinely light-weight Kabinett, with both efficacious acidity and bitter hints of fruit pit and apple pip balancing its residual sugar in an invigorating dynamic.

Fresh apple and orange take the lead in Weisrsquo;s 2006 Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett, which like their entire crop from Ockfen, was picked late this year. Hints of brown spices and citrus zest add interest to this delicate, bright Kabinett, and its juicy finish offers welcome ripeness, savory salinity, and hints of wet stone. This little model of Saar refreshment and impeccable balance, as usual, represents very good value.

The 2005 Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett (with a Kabinett-typical 8.5% alcohol yet hiding its high residual sugar) was fermented and aged in cask whereas the Goldtropfchen stayed in tank. Salted apple, wet stones, and luscious grapefruit combine for a fruit- and mineral-bath character on the palate and an infectious urge for the next sip even before this excellent value winersquo;s finish has died away. The team here mdash; cellarmaster Rudi Hoffmann, vineyard manager Hermann Jostock, and proprietor Nik Weis mdash; continued their streak of highly successful harvests this year, albeit at the price of extremely low yields.

Terrific. Sleek, well-defined and expressive, this exhibits loads of slate and grapefruit notes allied to a firm structure. Therersquo;s a density here too, which adds to the firmness. Good lingering finish. Drink now through 2012.

This is an ample, fleshy white, projecting slate, black currant and peach aromas and flavors. Itrsquo;s balanced on the soft side and the flavors permeate. Very concentrated and long. Drink now through 2012.
