St. Supery Elu Napa Valley Red Meritage 2004

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tarry and deep on the nose with smoke and oak tones rising above the tight core of earthy, herbal tinged dark cherry fruit. There are complicating notes of tree bark, forest floor, vanilla and pencil lead adding to the aromatic richness. A touch tight with great acidity giving the wine focus and thrust in the mouth. The tannins quickly start to close in from all sides and while they are copious they are also quite ripe. The fruit is red and sour yet at the same time has a deep, sweet, liquory quality. There’s some café au lait going on in the mouth but the fruit is pure, rich and edged with a filigree of herb, spice, licorice and orange peel. The tannins intrude on the finish a bit but I can see this improving with further cellaring. 93pts

Huge cherry nose with tons of spice. In the mouth a pleasant cacophony of oak and eucalyptus packed around a tight plucky core of bright red fruit. Oozes class. Love it.

Classic Cabernet nose of spice, eucalyptus, mint and cedar. Very nice, big, powerful and full bodied - this wine can age. Finishes on blueberry, tar and tobacco. Good acidity keeps the wine supple.
