St. Michael Eppan Pinot Grigio 2010

External Review by Wine Gems @ Perriello's:

Alto Adige, ItalySt Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio is an excellent example of this varietal from the Alto Adige region in the northeast of Italy. The innovative St Michael-Eppan winery is considered one of the best in South Tyrol and indeed in all of Italy. Founded in 1907, the winery now owns 350 hectares of vineyards. Gambero Rosso awarded it "Best Italian Winery of the Year" in 2000 and has named master winemaker Hans Terzer one of the "Best Ten Master Winemakers in the World." The St Michael-Eppan wines are certainly worthy to be called wine gems. This one received a 90-point rating from Wine Spectator for the 2008 vintage and was ranked #70 in the WS Top 100 Wines of 2009!St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio is straw yellow in color with a nose of pears, apples, floral and mineral notes. It is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, good structure and rich flavors of apples, pears, peaches and citrus. The wine is well balanced to enjoy now and over the next 3-5 years. It is dry and smooth on the palate, and leaves a long, pleasing finish.Enjoy St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio with filet of sole, grilled chicken, fruit salads and mild cheeses.

The Y-shaped valley formed by the confluence of the Adige and Isarco rivers is the source of Italyrsquo;s northern-most winemaking regions, the Alto Adige, from where Roger Clemens could throw a ball to Austria! Here St Michael-Eppan (Eppan is German for the Italian Appiano, a terroir favored for white grape varieties) produces a Pinot Grigio that is pale straw in color, has soft citrus and mineral flavors and finishes with spritely acidity. Perfect for fish and summer picnics.

The 2008 Pinot Grigio is a terrific example of Alto Adige Pinot Grigio at this price point. Steely, cool and reserved, the wine reveals plenty of varietal aromas and flavors in a focused style. Readers will have a very hard time finding a better Pinot Grigio for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2011.

The 2009 Pinot Grigio is very pretty in this vintage. It is an especially round, generous Pinot Grigio, with lovely depth to its fruit and a long, perfumed finish. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012.

From the Classico line of co-operative winery in northern Italy, here is a fresh and nicely aromatic expression of Pinot Grigio. Yoursquo;ll recognize tones of Golden Delicious apple, pear and zesty citrus.

Donrsquo;t let a Pinot bias sway you from the St. Michael-Eppan mdash; this is no lemon-water white! Richly textured, with layers of citrus and stone fruits, lychee nut and almond flavors. A vein of mineral runs through the intense fruit creating structure, and the bright acidity gives a feeling of freshness and vibrancy. Great bottle!
