11/7/12. 2007 vintage, The nose, although soft, had a nice left bank Bordeaux allure to it. The taste is unbalanced to the oak but some fruit is noticeable. There is a touch of mint in the medium body, and not very much tannin for so much oak. The whole experience was silky smooth with no alcohol distraction. A good buy for the price.
I'm tasting this in March, 2012. Considering the variety in the blend, I expected more dissonance. Maybe a little extra time in bottle gave this vintage time to settle down, because both the nose and the taste are deliciously understated. I taste the fruit and pepper, and they're anything but blustery or incoherent. Really solid wine, perhaps not breathtaking, but for eleven dollars this is yummy.
External Reviews for St. Francis Winery Red Splash
Red, ripe and robust fruit flavors with spicy aromas make this a wine that pairs well with a variety of foods. Great with grilled foods and pizza or pasta dishes with red sauce. The perfect wine to serve at a cocktail party or backyard barbecue.
Here's another of these delightful red blends we're seeing more and more of out of California. This one comes from St. Francis in Sonoma and it's all Sonoma County fruit. It's a tantalizing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Old Vine Zinfandel that's aged 18 months in oak and then 8 months in the bottle for a soft, supple mouthfeel. Food & Wine Magazine called it "One of the Best American Wines under $15" and the San Francisco Chronicle named it a "Top 5 Hearty Red $15 and under". Spicy and rich, this 2007 red is a winner.
