Good, medium-bodied red. It was impossible to see the color of the wine in the restaurant due to low lighting, and plastic cork closure made that a no-go, too. The wine was bright with cassis and an underlying acidity but not too much tannins. Smooth on the palate. Maybe could have gone for a slightly more tannic wine, given we were all eating steak. Still, the medium body made it pleasant to drink the whole bottle throughout the salad course and with all the varied sides.

i was totally overwhelmed by the oak. seemed like there was nice fruit, but the oak choked it out.

[With Strawberry and chocolate p a Saddleback Cab] The nose on the wine makes feel like I am in a Sonoma wine cave with huge oak and fruit. However on the palate I am sorry to say it is completely out of balance; too much oak/vanilla, a little plum, and some bitterness on the brief finish. I still love St Francis, but I would not purchase this again.

Winemaker's Notes:

Our 2007 Sonoma County Claret is a blend of carefully selected Bordeaux varietals grown throughout Sonoma County. The long 2007 growing season provided the grapes with the time that they needed to develop full ripeness, deep color, and soft tannins. After the handed picked fruit was de-stemmed, it was pumped into tanks for a slow and warm fermentation. After fermentation the wine was pumped into French, American and Hungarian Oak barrels to age for 24 months. Each varietal was stored separately until six months before bottling, when blending occurred. The final blend consists of 26% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petite Verdot. Artfully crafted by winemaker Tom Mackey, this wine is sure to impress.

Tasting Notes:

A complex though well balanced blend of luscious Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot & Malbec. Our Sonoma County Claret is a blend of skillfully selected Bordeaux varietals grown throughout Sonoma County. This is a true Sonoma County Claret, with the backbone and sturdy tannins of the Cabernet Sauvignon, sweet earthy notes of Sonoma Valley grown Merlot and the spicy characteristics of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The finished wine is an assemblage of Sonoma County terroir, ideally grown grapes and winemaking craftsmanship not to be missed.
