St Francis Pagiti Zinfandel 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The St. Francis Old Vines Zinfandel follows strict criteria that must be met to be included in this Classic Heritage wine. The vines must be at least 50 years old (many are as old as 100 years old), they must be head pruned without the benefit of trellising and dry farmed to make this blend. These ancient, head pruned vines tend to produce small quantities of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Once fully ripened the grapes are hand-picked, crushed, then fermented in stainless steel tanks for twelve to eighteen days. After pressing, the wine is pumped to new American oak barrels for fifteen months of aging. The wine is then bottled and held for an additional four to eight months until release.

After several years of making grapes for other wineries, they decided to start their own winery in 1979, and they have been producing quality wines ever since. They called the winery St. Francis Winery, named after St. Francis of Assisi, protector of the natural world, and in honor of the Franciscan order, thought to be the first to bring European grape cultivation to America. St. Francis currently has 600 acres under vine in Sonoma County, with many partnerships with other vineyards in the area, including Rockpile Vineyard, Amman Ranch, Leras Ranch, and Pagani Ranch. Each of their wines are produced from 100% hand-picked Sonoma fruit, but that’s not enough to produce such bold, full-bodied wines. With a nice a touch of American oak on the nose enhancing it’s spicy character, this marries rich, sweet berry fruit with an underlay of spice, vanilla and bramble that is the signature of classic Zinfandel. On entry there is a burst of rich blackberry fruit supported by soft tannins that have the slightest edge of rusticitiy and solid supporting acidity. This is not a wine of complexity but one built on a fine balance of pure ripe fruit and subtly spicy wood tones. The spice gains the upper hand on the finish, which is slightly hot but not unusually so, and shows really nice persistence. A solid, balanced Zin with enough snappy acidity to make it perfect a perfect accompaniment to a summers Barbeque. 90pts

The nose is jammy with huckleberries and strawberries. Fruit fills out on the mouth, nice level of acid. Tart finish.

combination of blackpepper and blackberries on the nose, deep leveled spices, quite intoxicating. the palate extends to scrumptious dark fruits w. some raspberries, dark currants and varying spice.s

Very much enjoying this wine. Bright and jammy but with a rustic dark wooden edge. Big acidic spicy finish. Great wine to have around - absolutely love it.

Soft, mashed, thick-bramble berries and black pepper on the nose. Delicious dark fruit in the mouth, it plays at the perfect volume, backed up by gentle tannins and a quiet reminder of oak on the finish. Nicely balanced, easy, delicious.

The 2007 vintage displays a stunning hue of deep purple with intensearomas of fig and raspberries. A flavorful mid-palate of jam and spicecompliment the finish with notes of minerality and lightly toasted oak.

The vines must be at least 50 years old; many are as old as hundred years old. Because of their age, these plots yield less than two tons per acre of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Many of these vineyards have Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet planted among the Zinfandel adding texture and color to what is called a "field blend". This distinct "old world style" Zinfandel displays deep aromas of ripe black cherries and boysenberries laced with licorice, shadowed by spicy toasted oak notes that carry into a long luscious finish.

St. Francis has hand selected a series of small family owned Zinfandel vineyards in Sonoma County that date back to the turn of the last century. Because of their age, these plots yield less than two tons per acre of exceptionally concentrated fruit. Many of these vineyards have Petite Sirah and Alicante Bouschet planted among the Zinfandel adding texture and color to what is called a “field blend”.
