St. Francis Merlot Sonoma County 2015

External Review by We Speak Wine:

VINTAGE: 2015 brought an early and light harvest that began on August 10, the earliest date in St. Francis’ history. e year started out very warm and dry but then cool, damp weather in May hampered fruit set. ough the result was smaller, looser clusters on the vine, the warm and consistent summer that followed produced high quality fruit with exceptional aromatics and concentrated flavors. VINEYARDS: The grapes in our Sonoma County Merlot come from our Certied Sustainable Estate Behler and Wild Oak vineyards located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, as well as from top growers throughout the region. Merlot thrives in this picturesque valley where warm days are cooled by evening breezes and fog from the Pacific Ocean. Each carefully selected vineyard contributes distinctive and individual qualities to the finished wine. WINEMAKING: All grapes are gently de-stemmed before cold-soaking for two days to extract optimal color and flavor. The fruit is fermented in separate lots, allowing each lot to be individually and distinctly craed before being aged in French oak barrels, 25% new. e wines are kept 16 months in barrel before nal blending and bottling. TASTING NOTES: This is a classic Merlot with rich, deep color and expressive flavors. Medium-to-full bodied, the wine shows off multi-layered aromas and flavors of plum, dried currant, peppercorn and savory spices before a long, silky finish. AGING: 16 MONTHS, 100% FRENCH OAK ALCOHOL: 14.8%

When Joe and Emma Martin purchased the 100 acre Behler Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma Valley in 1971, they never could have expected the success that their vineyard would achieve. After several years of making grapes for other wineries, they decided to start their own winery in 1979, and they have been producing quality wines ever since. They called the winery St. Francis Winery, named after St. Francis of Assisi, protector of the natural world, and in honor of the Franciscan order, thought to be the first to bring European grape cultivation to America. St. Francis currently has 600 acres under vine in Sonoma County, with many partnerships with other vineyards in the area, including Rockpile Vineyard, Amman Ranch, Leras Ranch, and Pagani Ranch. Each of their wines are produced from 100% hand-picked Sonoma fruit, but that’s not enough to produce such bold, full-bodied wines. It is the hard work of Tom Mackey, Director of Winemaking, and the other winemakers at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards that allows these great wines to be produced, year after year. Read less

Harvest Notes: Warm sunny days throughout the spring and summer months set the stage for a spectacular harvest in September 2014. The lack of rain meant that harvest began a little earlier than normal and was short in length, finishing up by the end of October. The temperate days leading up to harvest produced good yields of high quality fruit with concentrated flavors, complex aromatics and excellent structure. Tasting Notes: This is an expresssive and flavorful Merlot with multi-layered aromas and flavors of red cherry, plum, dried cranberry, espresso bean and savory spices. Medium-to-full bodied with a long, lingering finish. Food Pairings: Excellent with beef, duck and blue cheese. AGING: 16 months in 100% French Oak barrel pH: 3.84 ACIDITY: 0.61 g/l ABV: 14.8%
