St. Francis Chardonnay Sonoma County 2016

Member Review by BRUNOHOEPERS:

Aromas of fresh melon combine with hints of hazelnut and citrus. This medium-bodied Sonoma County Chardonnay displays fresh flavors of butterscotch and pineapple, followed by crisp acidity and a rich, lingering finish. - The Winery

When Joe and Emma Martin purchased the 100 acre Behler Ranch Vineyard in Sonoma Valley in 1971, they never could have expected the success that their vineyard would achieve. After several years of making grapes for other wineries, they decided to start their own winery in 1979, and they have been producing quality wines ever since. They called the winery St. Francis Winery, named after St. Francis of Assisi, protector of the natural world, and in honor of the Franciscan order, thought to be the first to bring European grape cultivation to America. St. Francis currently has 600 acres under vine in Sonoma County, with many partnerships with other vineyards in the area, including Rockpile Vineyard, Amman Ranch, Leras Ranch, and Pagani Ranch. Each of their wines are produced from 100% hand-picked Sonoma fruit, but that’s not enough to produce such bold, full-bodied wines. It is the hard work of Tom Mackey, Director of Winemaking, and the other winemakers at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards that allows these great wines to be produced, year after year. Read less

Very rich oaky nose. Medium acidity opens up onto a lot of oak and vanilla and spice. Some fruits, but its quite an oak bomb overall. Fine.

Tasting Notes: This is a bright and balanced Chardonnay with aromas of tropical fruit, mango peel, peach and honey. Flavors that hint of baked apple and pear galette merge with a creamy mouthfeel and long, smooth finish. Food Paring: Pair with shellfish, chicken, salmon and pastas or other dishes with cream sauces. AGING: Aged 6 months in 100% French Oak PH: 3.55 ACIDITY: 0.58 g/L ABV: 14.5%

Most of the grapes in this blend were grown in our own vineyards; the rest we carefully selected from nearby vineyards in Dry Creek, Sonoma Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River appellations, choosing only fully ripened grapes. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed and then fermented in different lots, 50% in new oak barrels, with six months aging before blending. Barrels are stirred by hand during aging to achieve a rich, lush mouthfeel. This Chardonnay does undergo 100% malolactic fermentation. As you’ll taste, the barrel component adds a toasty complexity. Fruit and pear aromas are offset on the palate by hints of oak and vanilla. Medium- to full-bodied, this Chardonnay has ripe fruit flavors, crisp acid in the mouth and a rich, lingering finish.
