What to Expect
Rhone Blends are generally based on Grenache, though some blends may be predominantly Syrah or Mourvedre. The fact that these wines are blends gives the winemakers unusual flexibility in creating a finished wine. In the Southern Rhone Valley of France the styles can range from light, fruity, soft Cotes du Rhone to big, bold, age worthy Chateaunuef-du-pape. This blend is also very popular in Australia and the United States where they frequently go by the Moniker GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and exhibit the rich, bold fruit that both countries are famous for.

WA 89 (2/2007): The 2004 Gigondas from the estate vineyards, is a blend of mostly Grenache but with 20-30% Syrah. Elegant, mid-weight, and deep ruby/plum/purple with hints of crushed rocks, flowers, and plenty of beautiful fruit, this is an attractive wine to drink over the next 7-8 years. Readers should keep in mind that the young, talented proprietor Louis Barruol produces negociant wines under the label Saint-Cosme, and all the estate wines appear under the label Chateau Saint-Cosme. In theory, the only estate wines are the three cuvees of Gigondas.
