St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone les Deux Albions 2008
"...Grenache planted in the Plan de Dieu and around the village of Carignan. Dark ruby/purple-hued, it offers plenty of kirsch and cassis notes intermixed with notions of underbrush, pepper, and earth. The wine cuts a broad, medium to full-bodied swath across the palate, and possesses impressive purity, length, and depth....90" WA 10/09
This exuberant red simply explodes with plummy flavors. That is not unusual for this winery, but the Les Dieux Albions is more extroverted than any wine I have ever tasted. (Now I suppose "extroverted" will show up on a list of annoying wine words.) A combination of Grenache (40%), Syrah (30%), Clairette, Mourvedre and Carignan (each 10%), this wine has potential to mature, and indeed after 45 minutes or so it stopped going off like fireworks and began to settle down and taste like the sleek, well-mannered Rhone red we all knew it could be. (Great legs!) As a 2008, it is still young and needs time, unless you like the way it carries on like a wild young girl at her parents' lawn party. Like every Ch. St. Cosme I have ever had (and I am drinking more of them these days), it's a good deal.
