St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2005
These extraordinary granitic coteaux should get a lot more recognition. The incredible sexy nose of the serine is a must in the Rhône valley. The ripening in 2005 was exceptional, with low yields and perfect balance. The malolactic fermentations took six months to be achieved, which has been great for the quality of the ageing in barrels.
This a medium bodied Syrah that has a very distinct black pepper taste that appears in the middle and lasts straight through to the finish. Very spicy but not so overpowering that you can't enjoy the other berry flavors that are present in this wine. In addition to the black pepper, this wine has a very meaty mouth feel and taste that truly makes this wine unique.
This wine starts out with dark fruits and a light pepper scent on the nose. In the mouth this wine is quite spicy with strong pepper and spice on the palate, along with traces of oak as well. A medium-light body with medium tannins that are present but not overly dominating. The finish is long yet balanced with substantial pepper there too. As a fan of the spicy character of Grenache and Syrah this was a very enjoyable wine for me.

Opaque ruby. Full-throttle boysenberry and cassis aromas are impressively pungent and focused, and show a strong graphite quality that reminded me of a northern Rhone wine. Firm minerality adds complexity to the ripe dark berry flavors, with firm tan... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
