St. Clement Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley(1998)

The 1998 vintage was one of the most difficult vintages of the decade, and only through dedicated attention in the vineyard did we achieve a delicious wine from a tricky vintage. It began with a cool, wet spring, which extended well into the summer. By dropping the smaller, immature bunches from the vines, the remainder of the grapes were encouraged to fully mature, but this unfortunately resulted in one of the smallest productions on record. This wine has a lighter red fruit character in the nose, more on the lines of raspberries and strawberries than blackberries, with a suggestion of cloves, violets and sweet candied flavors. There are hints of spice in the nose, with cedar, licorice, leather and red current. The 16 months in barrels imparts a toasted nut flavor to the wine, highlighting the spice and the touch of mint in the mouth.
