St Amant Winery 'The Road Less Travelled' Tempranillo Amador 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This smells very new worldy with lots of anonymous sweet fruit, fruit leather, wood spice and perhaps a touch tar and anise. Big, round and slightly chewy on entry with blackberry and black plum that has an interesting bitter cherry component with citrus zest and herb background notes. Decent structure, but this is a touch hot and the dark fruit wears a caramel edge that leads to an aggressive bunt sugar, backing spice, burnt blackberry pie fruit, dry finish. A bit ungainly but this grows on you and really resembles a dry port and in that paradigm is quite attractive. 90pts

Ripe red fruits, maple syrup and vanilla, smooth texture, a bit of tannin and crisp acidity, hints of leather and oak. Mostly, there's a sweetness (alcohol?) to the attack of this wine that I don't often taste, so it's unique and pleasant.

This wine is a one/two punch. The first sensation is sweet and mellow, then as it hits the mid-palate it blossoms into a spice monster. Lots of interesting things going on here. Love it.

The nose had tar and burnt cherry over oak that follows thru to a big mouth feel: lots of chew and pith from the oak, tar, spice and chocolate flavors on top of burnt-cherry fruit, hot; overall very enjoyable and at $18 a good price.

Solid notes of maple syrup, copper, bold earthy and cherry tones. There's some white chocolate on that as well. A little bit medicinal. This is a really enjoyable wine.
