Spring Valley Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend Walla Walla Valley Uriah 2008

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The Merlot-based Uriah includes 36% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec from the estate vineyards. Perhaps due to its youth, the wine has a bit too much heat and sharpness for its fruit. Spring Valley seems to be sacrificing terroir for sheer power. Itandrsquo;s plenty ripe, but the fruit flavors are blocky, with noticeable volatility.

Spring Valley Vineyard is situated 12 miles northeast of Walla Walla, spread amid the picturesque wheat fields of southeastern Washington with the Blue Mountains providing the backdrop. The terroir demonstrates a mesoclimate that is ideally suited for growing wine grapes. The unique microclimate of Spring Valley also allows the grapes to develop their own distinct characteristics. Initially, we planted a 2 acre block of Merlot in 1993 on a south-southwest facing hillside. The vines follow the north-south slope of the hills in vertical rows. This orientation, coupled with the declination of slope, allows the vines optimal use of sunshine, air drainage, and the reflective nature of the surrounding wheat fields. Great care is taken when caring for the vineyard. Under Gaynor Derby’s direction, every grape is tended by hand, including crop thinning, leaf pulling, and harvesting, not to mention hand-burying individual canes to protect them from the cold in the winters of southeastern Washington. Today, Spring Valley Vineyard consists of 115 acres of grapevines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Read less

This has density without excess weight, showing a real depth to its cherry, cinnamon, almond and cedar flavors, lingering against crisp tannins. Impressive for its deft balance and the way the finish sneaks up on you. Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Best from 2013 through 2016.

The 2008 Uriah Red Wine is a blend of 53% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Franc with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, spice box, herbs, cassis, and black currant lead to a firm, elegant, balanced wine in need of greater depth. Drink it through 2020.
