Spring Valley Frederick Estate Red 2013

Member Review by easterner1:

The 2008 was young, and had to be decanted. Another six or more years would have been good for it. That being said, this was a wonderful wine, with the Cab Franc component overshadowing the cabernet sauvignon. The wine was rich, bold, somewhat tannic, and full of currant and dark berry. The wine had a long finish, but the bouquet was limited.

Spring Valley Vineyard is situated 12 miles northeast of Walla Walla, spread amid the picturesque wheat fields of southeastern Washington with the Blue Mountains providing the backdrop. The terroir demonstrates a mesoclimate that is ideally suited for growing wine grapes. The unique microclimate of Spring Valley also allows the grapes to develop their own distinct characteristics. Initially, we planted a 2 acre block of Merlot in 1993 on a south-southwest facing hillside. The vines follow the north-south slope of the hills in vertical rows. This orientation, coupled with the declination of slope, allows the vines optimal use of sunshine, air drainage, and the reflective nature of the surrounding wheat fields. Great care is taken when caring for the vineyard. Under Gaynor Derby’s direction, every grape is tended by hand, including crop thinning, leaf pulling, and harvesting, not to mention hand-burying individual canes to protect them from the cold in the winters of southeastern Washington. Today, Spring Valley Vineyard consists of 115 acres of grapevines including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Read less

Firm in texture, with a grip of chewy tannins surrounding a sleek core of vivid currant and plum fruit, this lingers enticingly, showing intensity without weight. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2015 through 2020. 2,315 cases made. HS - Wine Spectator Magazine 92 Points(55% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 18% merlot and 8% petit verdot; aged for 21 months in 65% new French oak): Bright, saturated red-ruby. Musky aromas of black cherry, cocoa and rose petal, plus a touch of bitter chocolate. Sappy and light on its feet, showing a restrained sweetness to its youthful berry, spice and floral flavors. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins and good length. Clearly a wine from a cooler year--and not at all heavy for its 14.7% alcohol. Remained quite fresh in the recorked bottle for 48 hours. - Stephen Tanzer 90+ PointsThe Frederick Red is a Bordeaux-style blend55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. It doesnt show its strengths immediately, but, instead, is rather sharp, with chalky acidity. Give it several hours of breathing time and it fills out, with sweet cherry tobacco flavors, and hints of fresh-picked mushrooms. - P.G. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine 89 Points

The Frederick bottling complements the Uriah, with Cabernet Sauvignon comprising half the blend. All five Bordeaux grapes are included, and the finished wine is aged for 21 months in two thirds new French oak. It all adds up to a lush, high alcohol, jammy wine with black cherry fruit framed in toasty barrel flavors.

The 2008 Frederick Red Wine is made up of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc with the balance Petit Verdot and Malbec. Spice box, Asian spices, cassis, and blackberry aromas are followed by a Bordeaux-like, relatively forward, savory, full-bodied wine that will deliver optimum drinking from 2012 through 2020.
