Editorial Reviews for Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon
A youthful nose of jammy red currant fruit, toast, vanilla and milk chocolate greets the nose. Sweetly fruited on entry with lots of oak that adds a touch of bitterness in the mouth and gritty tannins to the finish. There’s nice fruit here, it’s a bit simple and the wine is youthfully clumsy but this shows some potential for future improvement. 86pts
Woody and volatile on the nose with minty, toasty aromas and not much fruit. Tactile in the mouth, thick, soft and a bit hot but packed with the soft, broad fruit that has become the standard for Napa Valley. The fruit is really sticky and it clings to the mouth on the long finish but there is very little detail or complexity here. There’s no acid to refresh the finish. 83pts
Cool and layered on the nose with black cherry fruit accented by notes of leather, blood, and a toasty oak underlay. With time this gains mint and gentle floral top notes. Clean and fresh in the mouth with clarity and purity to the core of liquory wild cherry fruit. Menthol top notes add some complexity and earth and wood spice tones on the moderately long finish complete the package. This is youthful, balanced and fresh with several years of upside ahead. Really a very attractive wine. 93pts
A bit of mushroom and green spice early on blows off to reveal beautifully fruity red cherry and currant fruit with gentle accents of tea and wood spice. In the mouth this is soft and broad with ripe tannins and lovely, rich, fresh red fruits. There are mocha accents and some nice spice top notes that follow through along with the fruit on the fairly long finish. This is fruit bomby but very well done in this style. 92pts
A bit brothy on the nose with celery salt, chili powder and dried onion notes that clear up somewhat with air but remain accenting the faded black currant fruit. Smooth and silky in the mouth with a touch of tomato acting as a foil to the slightly stick black cherry fruit. The balance here is quite fine and the fruit remains clear and obvious, if a touch simple, but this has seen better days. 89pts
Clean and crisp on the nose with a hint of spicy black fruit and a tarry core. At first this seems a bit soft in the mouth with some angular tannin lending the mid-palate an austere character. A bit of time in the glass allows some nice currant/raspberry fruit to emerge and while the tannins remain austere the wines gains nice balance and finishes well with good persistence of fruit and nice length. It’s fading in the glass but still has good backbone. 87pts
User Reviews for Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon
Add your review[FM c Gorg] Open with a classic nose of extracted red fruit, cassis, mint, and smoke. On the palate, concentrated cherry, bosenberry, bitter chocolate with a mild herb. KAB noted a lot of bitter fruit, but her palate was abmittedly off tonight. Seems more accessible than the bottle that I had 18 mos ago, but still has a lot of fat. I still think that it is still not within drinking window; it has more to reveal. Plan to hold the next (last) bottle for 2-3 years.
[Sparks, steak (sirlion>filet), mushrooms, tomato/onions] Purple. The nose was unremarkable, fruit cardboard. Surprising considering elegance of the palate despite its youth. Liquor, cherry, blueberry, and big tannins. With the tomatoes and the steak, it was pure cherry. Without food, the tannins were a little overwhelming, but fun. Great stuff. Among the 2001s that I have tasted, this is the best to date.
Bringing this one up to your nose you get a burst of menthol. Great dark dense color. Wonderful red and black fruit medley with some secondaries of lead, mushroom and soy. A seamless tannin level and great structure. A very feminine cabernet, but more like a female bodybuilder than a ballet dancer. A long graceful finish closed the deal nicely.

Decidedly herbal, with moderately ripe currant, earth, sage and wild berry flavors, too. Drink now through 2005.
A dazzling wine, sleek and sophisticated, with beautiful ripe fruit purity. It has rich currant, crème de cassis, light mocha and herb shadings and a silky-smooth texture that firms on the finish as the tannins make their presence more evident. Drink now through 2014.
Ripe, smooth and polished, with an elegant array of plum, black cherry, currant, herb and olive notes, with a rich aftertaste that lingers on and on. Delicious. Drink now through 2008.
The medium-bodied 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon displays some of the attractive gravelly notes often found in this wine, along with black currant fruit, lavender, subtle oak, sweet tannin for the vintage, and a well-balanced, pure finish. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2016,
The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, which has taken on much greater complexity and intensity since I tasted it right after bottling, is largely all Cabernet Sauvignon with just a small amount of Cabernet Franc in the blend. The owner's daughter, Beth Novak, and her assistants, Rosemary Cakebread and Jennifer Williams, made an intelligent decision in bottling this wine later than normal to resolve some of the tannin issues, and they have certainly succeeded. This wine, which I believe will evolve for 25 or more years, has a gorgeous nose of violets, black currants, licorice, camphor, and a hint of graphite. Layered, rich, and full-bodied, the wine has an opaque purple color as well as wonderful purity and balance. It could be considered the wine world's version of haute couture at a top address in Paris. It's a beauty, perfectly balanced and as flawless and seamless as a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa can be. Drink it over the next 25 years.
Ripe and spicy with intriguing gaminess, the '95 Spottswoode has a juicy texture and fine acidity. However, the tannins are very firm and dominate from mid-palate on. Hold this wine for at least two years - preferably more - to let it mellow, then enjoy with a robust meal of sautéed duck breasts with mushroom timbales.
This fleshy wine exhibits rich currant, game, herb and cedary notes. Well-focused, plush and complex, the flavors are elegant and graceful through the finish. Nonetheless, it leaves you hoping for a shade more depth and concentration. Best from 2005 through 2012. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.
Winemaker's Notes:
96+ points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): ...a huge wine bursting with class and personality. It shows gorgeous delineation in its dark fruit, camphor, tar and licorice, with striking finesse and breathtaking balance. All of the aromas and flavors build effortlessly to the round, sensual finish. Despite its size, the 2009 is a relatively accessible wine... a dazzling effort and easily one of the wines of the vintage. Wow... includes 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. (Dec 2011)
