California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

This is one of Napa's most promising Cabernets of the vintage. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with sweet aromas of creme de cassis intermixed with licorice and spice box. The wine is seamless, elegant, and intense with plenty of up-front fruit, but not the muscle and overall structure of the 1999. It possesses a strong mid-palate and length, something many 2000s lack. Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 108, May/June 2003 ($80) Full ruby-red. Big, rich, perfumed aromas of blueberry, boysenberry, violet, menthol, coffee and loam. Rich and mellow but vinous, with fruit-driven flavors of currant, blueberry and boysenberry. Nicely full in the middle but slightly lean on the back end, with a bit of acidity showing. "In 2000 we benefitted by being on the valley floor, with lighter soils," noted winemaker Rosemary Cakebread.
