Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 1999

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Wine Spectator: Firm, intense and spicy, with currant, blueberry, tobacco and cedar notes that are full-bodied, well-structured, balanced and concentrated. The tannins present a chewy aftertaste, yet the flavors flow through. The best of two bottles tasted. -1999 California Cabernet blind retrospective (2009). Drink now through 2016. (2009)

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, two of Mary’s daughters, Beth and Lindy, work for the family winery that each year releases four very special wines: the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and the recently-introduced Field Book Rhone. The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed. Read less

A youthful nose of jammy red currant fruit, toast, vanilla and milk chocolate greets the nose. Sweetly fruited on entry with lots of oak that adds a touch of bitterness in the mouth and gritty tannins to the finish. There’s nice fruit here, it’s a bit simple and the wine is youthfully clumsy but this shows some potential for future improvement. 86pts

Dense ruby/purple color and a beautiful nose of graphite intermixed with blueberry, creme de cassis, and acacia flower. The wine is full-bodied, has decent acidity, sweet, well-integrated tannin, and subtle wood.

...Rich yet cool aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice and bitter chocolate. Dense and rich, with sharply delineated flavors of dark berries, chocolate and cedar. Offers compelling vinosity, and the structure for slow development in bottle. Finishes... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
