Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

This somewhat underrated vintage has rounded a corner and become awfully inviting. We uncovered ripe strawberry and blackberry notes, plus cookie dough, graham cracker, maple, cream cheese, and a hint of hibiscus. The sweet fruit characters are balanced by wonderful acidity and delicacy, with integrated tannins and a dash of spice. Linda summed this wine up perfectly, “Charming!”

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, two of Mary’s daughters, Beth and Lindy, work for the family winery that each year releases four very special wines: the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and the recently-introduced Field Book Rhone. The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed. Read less

Bringing this one up to your nose you get a burst of menthol. Great dark dense color. Wonderful red and black fruit medley with some secondaries of lead, mushroom and soy. A seamless tannin level and great structure. A very feminine cabernet, but more like a female bodybuilder than a ballet dancer. A long graceful finish closed the deal nicely.

The medium-bodied 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon displays some of the attractive gravelly notes often found in this wine, along with black currant fruit, lavender, subtle oak, sweet tannin for the vintage, and a well-balanced, pure finish... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1996 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml
