Spottswoode Cab 2012

Member Review by Daniel Petroski:

Very similar Larkmead character – cassis infused dried herbs and cedar, spices… rich red and black forest floor fruit…. dusty bitter sweet chocolate and mocha tannins…. However, not sweet or over-the-top… balanced and elegant.

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, two of Mary’s daughters, Beth and Lindy, work for the family winery that each year releases four very special wines: the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and the recently-introduced Field Book Rhone. The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed. Read less

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 96The prodigious 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate may be Spottswoode's strongest effort since their superb 2002 and 2001. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic bouquet of violets, graphite, blueberries, and creme de cassis with hints of licorice and cedar. Stunningly pure and elegant as well as substantial and authoritatively flavored, this is a long, rich, concentrated wine with the grace of a ballerina. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and consume it over the following 20-25+ years.

Good full ruby. Expressive nose offers blackberry, boysenberry, violet, licorice, minerals and naphtha; displays a more typical Spottswoode character than the '04 or '03. Then dense, plush and chocolatey, with a seamless texture and subtle minerality... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2005 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml

There are 5,200 cases of the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, a blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc. This is one of Napa's most promising Cabernets of the vintage. It exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with sweet aromas of creme de ca... Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. A tannic wine from a tannic vintage this has ripe plum and black cherry flavors with light earthy notes; it s firm and a bit austere.--Spottswoode vertical. Drink now through 2008. 4 500 cases made. TM Wine Spectator.
