Spierhead Riesling 2016

Member Review by zufrieden:

The 2016 SpierHead Riesling has an inviting bouquet of lychee nut, pear and (especially) green apple with a very light yellow, almost rhubarb wine colour. On the palate, the wine is light-bodied, with good apple-like acidity, a hint of pie spice, lime and petrol with perhaps a dollop of sugar. Clean, pure and mouth-cleansing. 88

This Kelowna BC Riesling has a nose of green apple peel (or rind) with a noticeable kerosene tinge. The colour is light straw, limpid and clear. Flavours on entry include sharp, acidic cooking apple (a Bramley comes to mind) with some astringent apple peel on the finish. If you like this style - which is, admittedly, clean - serve cold with pan fried trout. 86 points.

This is another competent expression of Riesling by the folks at SpierHead in East Kelowna BC; though lacking the fruit of the 2010, this wine has good structure and balance with the acidity not too overpowering. There is a nice floral bouquet with pear and a touch of peach. This wine is good for current consumption but will age nicely for 2-4 more years at least. We want more of this style in BC which is stamped with a recognizable local character. 87 points.

This Okanagan winery is producing a nicely balanced Riesling with just a touch of sweetness to counter the citrus-like acidity. This is the best British Columbia Riesling that has passed my lips to date, with beautiful pear, bog-cranberry, and freshly cooked sugar cookie nose. The palate is also suitably impressed by acidic cleanliness, unripe pear and lemon-citrus notes along with a surprisingly long finish for the variety. Easily a match for the more modern Rhine style one finds in the Nahe these days.
