Spier Private Collection Merlot 2005
Grapes from selected vineyard blocks were hand-harvested at optimum ripeness, meticulously sorted, gently crushed and cooled to 10-12°C. Cold soaking preceded temperature-controlled fermentation; 15% of which occurred in open vats. The wine was matured in new French- and American- oak barrels; with only the finest wine selected for blending and bottling. Also contains 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.
I have enjoyed this bottle over the course of 3 days. During these 3 days I have experienced this wine to be very easy and full-bodied. I normally don’t like Merlot but this wine surprised me with notes of milk-chocolate and an almost untouchable hint of menthol. But also the very ripe plum and oak / or tobacco flavors where noticeably present. It all felt very juicy and composed in the mouth. This all while being almost creamy soft. Certainly a wine that will pass again.
