Spier Private Collection Merlot 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Grown in selected vineyard blocks that have proved to yield rich varietal character, the grapes were picked at optimum ripeness. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks involved intensive extraction practices. Following alcoholic fermentation, the wine was transferred to oak barrels. Judicious maturation for 16 months in French oak barrels ensured that the fruit is not overpowered by excessive oak flavours.

THE SPIER EXPERIENCE Spier is one of the Stellenbosch winelands’ most celebrated destinations. The wine farm has sweeping views of the Helderberg mountain range, and lies besides the calming waters of the Eerste River. While producing award-winning wine, and offering world-class hotel and conference facilities, we recognise that we are part of a rapidly changing world that requires a new way of doing things. We hope that a visit to our farm will inspire fresh insights, discovery and reflection as we journey together towards a sustainable future. Spier is located in the heart of South Africa’s primary wine-growing region, just 20 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. We were one of the first organisations in South Africa to be accredited by Fair Trade in Tourism South Africa. Spier was also the first winery to be accredited by the Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association. Read less
