The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Earthy nose coffee, blackberry. On the palate coffee, brown sugar, black fruit, occasional gamey quality, long finsh. Far better than the 1995 on every measure; drinking well now and will improve with time. Great stuff; my second favorite of the night

Initially the hints of cassis give this wine a Super Tuscan feel but on the second sip the ripe fruits of the Piedmont soon start pouring forward. Each year this wine becomes more harmonious, a bright, silky wine with a lush texture. The tannins provide a super finish. Simply beautiful. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2031. (SN 09/07)

So young. Concentrated. Felt unbalanced without food; smoke, licorice, tannins. The lamb tempered the size of the wine and revealed its potential. The 1989 was preferred almost unanimously at the table. however the majority saw great potential in the 2001. I believe that this vintage will be a good investment for the future. Interestingly , Angelo Gaja stated that after this run of great vintages, they have sold all of their crop from 2002 and will likely sell all of their 2003 crop. (92-95)

Stunning nose of strawberries, blackberries with some spices and dark cherries. Mid-full body wine of a complex structure with great rounded tannins and a fresh, clean and super long finish. Very impressive wine. The 2001 vintage was a stunner and this wine is improving. Decant for several hours.

I've had this wine on two separate occasions and it has been outstanding both times... I highly recommend treating yourself if you have the opportunity.

Wine Spectator Gorgeous aromas of blackberries and ripe strawberries follow through to a full-bodied palate with fine tannins and a clean fresh finish. Very round and ripe tannins. Lovely wine. Best after 2008. 5 800 cases made. Score: 93. James Suckling February 28 2005.
