The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

Balanced and mature. Dark fruit and saddle leather, smooth, long finish. Many at the table felt it was the best wine of the night. I prefer bigger wines, but this was well made by every measure. Drinking beautifully esp with the lamb.

1989 was an excellent year, but only in Piedmont. In almost all the other Italian wine regions the late maturing of the grapes was hindered by bad weather. In Piedmont, it threatened to rain for 15 days (it poured rain everywhere else) but then returned to nice weather and it was possible to harvest some grapes which were in great condition. Because the 1989 vintage was only good in Piedmont (also a few places outside of Italy) it became obscured by the outstanding vintage of 1990 (which was a good vintage worldwide). Angelo recommended we open this bottle 1-1½ hrs before pouring, decanting and then immediately pouring back in the bottle and re-corking (double decanting). The '89 Sperss was showing nicely with a brick red colour, an enticing gamy nose, and classic ''old nebbiolo'' flavours. Hints of rose petal, licorice, nice fruit and long fluidity on the palate. delicious... -nicolas contenta

The 1989 Sori Tilden is a monument to the Nebbiolo grape, as well as to Barbaresco. Not surprisingly, it is the most backward, tannic, muscular, and masculine of the Gaja Barbarescos. With tons of t... Robert Parker. A Nebbiolo wine from Piedmont in Italy. 1989 Gaja, Angelo Sori Tildin 3000ml

Complex and fascinating, offering all sorts of floral, earthy overtones to the solid core of black cherry, blackberry and anise flavors. An intense wine that shows many facets, including a welcome whiff of vanilla and toast on the aftertaste. 2,700 c... Wine Spectator. aja's Barbarescos are textbook long-term agers. One of the innovators of his day, Gaja was the first to usie small oak barrels in 1975 to soften the edge of Nebbiolo and craft a rich, expressive rendering of this noble grape. 1989 produced perhaps the best reds of the decade.
