Winemaker's Notes:

Stylish Gran Reserva and an excellent example of American oak-aged Tempranillo. Lovely amber reflection in the glass, vanilla-spice and coco on the nose, followed by rich, mouth-filling layers of soft red fruits and oak-spice.

It is located in Oyón (Álava), with a total surface of 110.000 m2, more than 50.000 of which are occupied by buildings. Our vineyards are located in Cenicero (Rioja Alta), close to the Najerilla river (a tributary to the Ebro river), facing Northwest and with a, predominantly, ferric-clayey soil. It is located in Oyón (Álava), with a total surface of 110.000 m2, more than 50.000 of which are occupied by buildings. Our vineyards are located in Cenicero (Rioja Alta), close to the Najerilla river (a tributary to the Ebro river), facing Northwest and with a, predominantly, ferric-clayey soil. The rest of the grapes come from selected winegrowers in Rioja Alavesa. All the grapes are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. First wine that I tried at the Rioja event. Nice oaky barrel flavors in the aroma and palate. Update: Nov 9, 2011 - Had this in the office. The oaky aromas are very complex, though not as powerful as I remember, with hints of herbs and red chili peppers. The mouth has pretty nice tannins, with a good deal of heat in the back. A little bit of cherry fruit in the middle softens it.

Prototypical Rioja. Fresh and bright with an earthy mineral core. Great aroma of dried cherries and oak. Not too extreme in any facet so it would be a great gift wine. Paired lovingly with a grilled chorizo sausage. Do not decant as it fell apart later in the evening. Drink now.

Had this 2 June, 2011. Very classical Rioja - berry plums with clear leather, cedar and vanilla. Soft oak gives a soft and medium full taste. In fact, for a Rioja, it is surprisingly light, not very tannic and has a gentle aftertaste. Not a lot of depth, but easy-drinking. I liked it.

88 Points Steve Tanzer: Medium red. Shy nose slowly opens to display redcurrant and dried cherry, along with subtle vanilla bean and tobacco qualities. Light, gently sweet red fruit flavors are silky and smooth, with no obvious tannins or rough edges. Understated and nicely balanced, with good finishing lift and clarity. Fans of old-school Rioja should give this a spin.

This had probably been a premier wine a year or two ago but unfortunately it is past its prime now (2009). Nevertheless it remains a good representative of the Rioja bearing all the traditional characteristics of the kind.

    This is truly delicious. It even held up the next day (after pumping out the air and keeping in the refrigerator). At first sniff, it reminds me of being in an old library with the windows opened and a fresh spring breeze, and then, at the end, just when you're not sure, a hint of something sweet, like a freshly opened jar of maraschino cherries or freshly licked red lollipop. The taste is velvety soft, and a little smokey-spice lightly scratching the back of your throat, like someone lightly brushing their finger nails against your skin. As the wine settles on your palate and the aroma makes its way into your nasal cavity, a blast of sweet strawberry syrup with a faint whisper of plum jam. This is SUCH a fun wine!!!

    "El Coto De Imaz Rioja Reserva 2004 is brick-cherry red. It contains aroma with slight hints of oak standing out over the ripe fruit. It is tasty

    Lengthy maceration with the skins followed by extended aging in American oak barrels has created a firm, well-structured wine with notes of wild strawberry and vanilla.
