Souverain Cabernet Franc Alexander Valley Estate Vineyard 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 vintage was one of the earliest on record. Early bud break was followed by a very even tempered and modest spring and summer growing season. In late August there was a warming trend that lasted four days, bringing 100+ degree heat and prompting us to begin picking. The balance of September was pleasant with a cooling trend in the final week that lasted into the first week of October. This brought a weather pattern more reminiscent of mid-summer, with lots of morning fog and cool days in the low 80s. One last burst of warm weather came through in mid-October, with the last of the grapes in by October 13th. Overall, the vintage produced very high quality grapes, with concentrated fruit flavors. All of the Cabernet Sauvignon lots were vinified and aged separately. This allows Ed Killian to tailor the fermentation and aging process to best fit each vineyard's individual characteristics. The 2004 vintage was aged for 28 months in new oak barrels (60% European, 40% American), allowing the black cherry and blackberry flavors to better integrate with the extracted mouth-coating tannins. The combination of French, Hungarian and American oak adds to the depth and complexity of this reserve wine, with each component bringing a different aromatic or spiciness to the nose. Individual lots are finally chosen for blending to the reserve, and trial blends are made to find the best balance of each vineyard lot which will compose an exemplary and age worthy Alexander Valley Cabernet. The wine spent an additional 8 to 12 months in bottle before release. Layered nuances of vanilla, fresh roast coffee, nutmeg and clove. This balanced Cabernet Sauvignon is well-structured with fine-grained tannins that lead to a long, powerful finish. This Cabernet Sauvignon is round, balanced and inviting.
