Southbrook Winery Sauvignon Blanc Niagara Peninsula Vqa Triomphe 2007

External Review by Appellation America:

If Ontario winemakers couldn’t make good wine in 2007, they might as well pack up their tents and sell insurance. 2007 was the best year Ontario has ever seen - and that’s not hyperbole. Given a blazing August with little rain, getting ripeness was not an issue; the only challenge for the winemaker was choosing the optimal harvest dates. In order to maintain acidity, Ann Sperling, the winemaker for this expressive Sauvignon Blanc, chose two vineyard blocks from slightly cooler parts of the Niagara Peninsula – Vineland Bench and Niagara River Parkway. The grapes came in respectively at 18.2° and 21.3° Brix. Each lot was fermented separately in stainless steel and then blended. The wine was left to soak on the lees and taken off before bottling under Stelvin closures. The wine is straw coloured with lovely lime, grapefruit and cut grass aromas. It’s fresh and lively on the palate with green bean and gooseberry flavors. Medium-bodied with a long finish carried on the citrus acidity. 1300 cases were produced.

Southbrook Vineyard’s goal is to engage both “mouths and minds” with an experience keyed to all your senses, and to your intellect. The winery’s sensory centerpiece in Niagara-on-the-Lake is a striking glass pavilion that is designed to honour the vineyard – reflecting Southbrook’s focus on innovation, classic truths and environmental stewardship. Southbrook Vineyards is the new name for the former Southbrook Winery. The name change highlights our new status and focus as stewards of our 150 acre Niagara-on-the-Lake property. The vineyard is certified organic and we are also Canada's first winery with biodynamic certification for its vineyard. Southbrook Vineyards has an enduring commitment to producing great wines with a sense of place, and we believe that organic and biodynamic grape-growing are essential to that goal. Our site offers some of the most favourable conditions for grape growing in Canada and is extremely well-suited to the demands of the Bordeaux varieties that Southbrook is famous for producing. Bill and Marilyn Redelmeier evolved the family business from a roadside stand in Richmond Hill in the 1980s to a respected winery, thriving farm market and unique special event location. Since its inception as a winery in 1991, Southbrook has earned critical and consumer acclaim for the excellence of its table, dessert and fruit wines.. Southbrook’s new facility in Niagara-on-the-Lake meets LEED Gold standards and opened its doors in June 2008. Read less
