The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Wonderfully fragrant, with floral, berry and mineral aromas that turn to minerals on the palate. Full-bodied, with lovely polished tannins and a beautiful ripe fruit and mint aftertaste. This is a wine with wonderful balance, yet powerful. Best after 2007.

The 2000 Sori Tildin is larger in dimension but the major difference is in the nose, riper, warmer, and with more chocolate and licorice as well. The roundness and suppleness, the richness of the extraction, and the ampleness of the finish are also superior. Drink: 2005–2018.

The 2000 Sori San Lorenzo is, as always, the most complete of the three, more complex in aroma with the notes of anise, herbs, and spices more completely integrated with the fruit, the fullness and dimension of the flavors more perceptible, the finish longer and more authoritative. Drink: 2005–2020.

Serious dark color, with meaty, earthy aromas that blow off to ultraripe and exotic fruit. Fresh truffles and porcini. Almost Port-like in the end. Full-bodied, with masses of velvety tannins and a long, long, caressing finish. Solid. This was the first of Gajaandrsquo;s single-vineyard Barbarescos to be vinified separately, in 1967. Best after 2010.

Amazing aromas of plums, strawberries, and minerals follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultraripe tannins and a long, mineral and blackberry aftertaste. Gorgeous. So fresh and structured. Best after 2010.
