Sori San Lorenzo Angelo Gaja 1996

Winemaker's Notes:

"...amazingly dense and filled with silky, ripe, fat tannins that just balloon on the palate...refined and elegant despite its full-bodied, rich personality. Slightly smoky, toasted complexity on the blackberry-packed finish...96." WS 10/99.

The Gaja winery was founded in Piedmont, Italy by Giovanni Gaja in 1859. It has been passed down through five generations of the family (who came to Italy from Spain in the 18th century) now under the direction of his great grandson Angelo Gaja. The initial wines were Barbarescos (in the Barbaresco and Treiso districts), then Barolo (in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra), and through the years the wines have branched out into other styles and vineyard locations, with expansion into Tuscany in the mid 1990s. These began as expressions of Brunello di Montalcino. In 1996, they launched Ca’Marcanda, a Gaja Super Tuscan made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. This highly successful venture in the Bolgheri of Maremma was intended with the Piedmontese understanding of the different terroirs and how they affect specific grapes, celebrating the best expressions of their environment. In addition to outstanding, world renown wines, Gaja also produces some top notch grappas.  Read less

The dense opaque purple-colored 1996 Sori San Lorenzo possesses complex aromatics consisting of classic Nebbiolo scents of rose petals dried herbs spice box cedar and abundant jammy black cherry and berry fruit. It is impressively powerful and muscular with moderate tannin a sweet unctuous texture and a 40+ second finish. Although the aromatics are stunning this 1996 remains youthful and backward. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. As I reported in issue 124 (8-27-99) 1996 is a spectacular vintage for Angelo Gaja. There is a lot of speculation as to why he has dropped the name Barbaresco from the labels of his single-vineyard wines but given his personality and overall commitment to quality it can only be to improve the quality and give him some flexibility in difficult vintages to produce a wine that may or may not be 100% Nebbiolo. At least that s how I view it. Importer: Vinifera Imports Ronkonkoma NY; tel. (516) 467-5907 Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
