Vine Hill is the backbone of our Pinot Noir fruit, with lots from the newer Owsley vineyard
joining blocks from Les Pierres and The Cutrer vineyard, right outside our barrel chai. Soils
range from Goldridge through sandy loams and on to the heavily cobbled river rock typically
found at Les Pierres. High density spacing, rootstocks which limit excessive growth, and a
and 828 all contribute
to the elegant fruit which graces our picking baskets early each Fall. More than three
dozen individual lots are watched over carefully to assure that each vintage of our Pinot Noir
builds the lasting legacy earned by our Chardonnay.
PINOT NOIR IS CRAFTED WITH CARE
Grapes are picked by hand early each morning into small bins, and hand-sorted before a
gentle destemming. During the initial fermentation the wine is punched down by hand in
small, five-ton open top fermenters. When we judge the moment has arrived, the wine is
gently pressed off, gravity racked to barrels and allowed to complete malolactic fermentation.
We’ve aged our Pinot Noir in a regimen of mostly new and once and twice-used French oak,
predominantly from coopers Remond and Rousseau. After resting for most of a year, the
wine is moved unfined and unfiltered to bottle, there to evolve and do the wondrous things
that wine will do.
TASTE ALONG WITH TERRY ADAMS
Our Pinot Noir shows an intense ruby red color we’ve come to expect, and like the last
vintage, this wine is full of personality. Aromas are pleasantly earthy, and change with every
bit of attention given, showing red huckleberry, blackberry, boysenberry and plum alongside
a hint of truffle and leather, all touched off with Chinese Five Spice. Silky tannins and a solid
acid backbone enhance a well-structured wine with a round, creamy mouth-feel and a long,
lingering finish. A pleasant barrel spice leads a cornucopia of flavors playing across red to
black fruit and back again to red, featuring red currant, blackberry and pomegranate. Our
fourth release of Pinot Noir will continue to evolve and become ever more complex over
time, but why wait? Don’t worry, we’ll make another wonderful wine for you next vintage.
From the heart of the Russian River Valley, Enjoy!

THOUGHTS ON THE VINTAGE
FROM WINEMAKERS TERRY ADAMS
The rains arrived here in Coastal California quite late, with
extensive heavy weather in April and on into May. At that
point, harvest was expected to be delayed by as much as a
month, but a steadily warmer summer growing season found
the vines racing ahead a bit in a struggle to catch up. Larger
than average clusters brought a bit of uneven ripening, and
we rolled the dice to assure flavors were not just fully mature,
but bursting with complex flavors, concentrated in color,
taste, with wonderful acidity, as they usually are in our top
Pinot Noir vineyard lots. In the end, we harvested about
two weeks later than normal, to good effect as the grapes
proved to be worth the wait.
