The Sonoma region has a rich heritage filled with historic California character that dates back to the early 1800’s. It began when Russian colonists planted grapes along the Sonoma coastline. The credit, however, really goes to the Spanish Franciscan fathers, who in 1823, planted several thousand grape vines at their northernmost California mission, San Francisco Solano. This is located right off the world-famous town square in the city of Sonoma. Padre José Altimera claimed that the Sonoma Valley was the best site he had ever found for a new mission because it had everything he was looking for – fertile land, mineral springs, waterways, abundant game, and a mild climate. For the same reasons, today Sonoma is still cherished by many. By the mid-1800’s, several cuttings from the Sonoma Mission vineyards were taken to start new vineyards throughout Northern California. Much of this viticulture activity has been credited to the man considered "The Father of California Wine Industry ", Count Agoston Haraszthy who later, brought from Europe, over 100,000 cuttings of prized grape varietals from France, Italy and Spain. He has also been credited with being the first to promote the idea that fine wines could be produced in Sonoma County. Today, Sonoma County produces over 130,000 tons of grapes that are grown on nearly 48,000 acres of vineyards. There are hundreds of wineries producing premium wine in their own unique style, garnering awards from all over the world. For our winemaker of Sonoma Creek, he agrees that Sonoma County wines display a special quality that he knows you'll to enjoy. Read less
