Solena Pinot Noir Hylands United States Oregon Willamette Valley Mcminnville 2008

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

The new releases begin with the 2008 Pinot Noir Grand Cuveacute;e which spent 13 months in 16% new oak. Dark ruby in color, it displays a pleasant perfume of earth/underbrush, spice box, violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Medium-bodied, dense and nicely packed with succulent fruit, it has enough structure to provide pleasure for another 6ndash;8 years. It is an excellent value.

Soléna Estate wines are made at the state-of-the-art Northwest Wine Company, which was founded by Laurent Montalieu in June 2003 in response to growing demand for a premier, technologically advanced custom winemaking facility. Located on Orchard Street in McMinnville, the 115,000 square foot temperature controlled facility allows for winemaking under pristine conditions utilizing the best equipment available. Each Soléna wine is handcrafted in small lots often using rotary oak barrel fermenters to achieve a complex style with intense fruit and finely integrated tannins. After successful careers in the Oregon wine industry, the husband and wife team of Laurent Montalieu and Danielle Andrus Montalieu purchased an 80-acre estate to commemorate their marriage. In May 2002, they launched Soléna by releasing their first bottling and, shortly thereafter, opening a tasting room in Carlton. Soléna is the combination of the Spanish and French words Solana and Solene, celebrating the sun and the moon, and the name that Laurent and Danielle gave to their daughter. Soléna Estate began as a way to explore winemaking with other varietals grown in neighboring appellations while the family's young Domaine Danielle Laurent vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton District matured. In May, 2007, Danielle and Laurent added the spectacular 100-acre Hyland Vineyard in the McMinnville AVA to their estate vineyard holdings. Today Laurent and Danielle are producing Pinot Noir from their estate vineyards as well as Pinot Gris, Merlot, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Late Harvest Riesling from select sites throughout Oregon and Washington. Their estate property in Yamhill is now home to the new Soléna and Grand Cru Estates winery, completed just in time for the 2009 harvest. Join us at the Soléna tasting room in the new winery and explore the Old World warmth and elegance that accommodates the ultimate in state-of-the-art winemaking technology. Grand Cru Estates, created by Danielle and Laurent and their partners Steve and Marian Bailey in 2008, is a private club which offers members the extraordinary winemaking experience of handcrafting their own premium Pinot Noir from the region's finest grapes, with expert winemaking guidance, in a beautiful estate winery. The dark cherry-scented 2003 Pinot Noir Grande Cuvee is an outstanding wine as well as being one of the finest Pinot Noirs on the market at this price point. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers broad, intense layers of black cherries in its powerful, full-flavored, and marvelously lengthy personality. Drink it over the next 5-6 years.

Lithe and refreshing for its focused raspberry and black cherry flavors and crisp balance, with an earthy note adding interest to the finish. Drink now through 2012.

This wine feels dense and ripe enough to rival a powerhouse red from Red Mountain. But it is also vinous: Its aromas are of soil, its flavors are spicy and firm, a savory spicebox of black fruit and pink peppercorns. Give it some time to smooth the blunt finish, then serve with wild mushroom risotto.

Deep, dark red. Big, ripe, highly perfumed aromas of blueberry, cassis and cocoa; smells sweet and inviting. Big, ripe and thick, with dark berry flavors and a lush, velvety texture. The finish is long and persistent, emphasizing the pronounced floral quality.

Vivid ruby. Expansive, seductive bouquet of raspberry, cherry compote, potpourri and spicecake. Juicy red fruit flavors are braced by zesty acidity and pick up a peppery, spicy quality on the back end. This racy, precise pinot finishes with very good punch and lingering red berry and floral notes.
