Fields Family Wines is not just a winery, it’s also a collection. Not a collection of wineries, but a collection of family and friends, all working together to make the vineyard what it is today. After years of searching for the perfect land, the Fields family decided on a place along Woodbridge Road, in the heart of the Lodi appellation. With the help of Ryan Sherman, their winemaker, and the constant care of the Fields family, including Russ, Melinda, Van, Zack, and Mia, they collected their first harvest at the end of 2007. There are three main grapes grown at the Fields Family’s vineyards: Organic Syrah, Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, and Old Vine Zinfandel. The Syrah has been certified organic, and the highly demanded grapes are used in both the Field Family Wines label as well as in other wines throughout California. Read less

The first Super Tuscan from the US that I've tasted that can proudly bare the name. This wine contains all the complex flavors of blackberry, cherry, plum, espresso, licorice, bittersweet chocolate, and vanilla. The taste is rich and smooth, the tannins firm yet supple and balanced. The brisk finish and balanced velvety tannins made it a fine companion to polenta with a deep, red bolognese style suce.

As with all Fields Family wines, the Ladro is wonderful to drink. The bottle opens, airs, and is hard to put down. When I last served this at friend's wine tasting people kept coming back asking for more and wondering how I came upon it. From the nose to the finish, this wine is so balanced. It's range in pairings is wide. Not to fruity, and enough acid to really enjoy no matter the setting.

In Italy the term "Super Tuscan" was meant to describe any Tuscan wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws for the region. Desiring to make a richer style wine, often Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) were often added in to the final wine. This wine has a Sangiovese backbone – but not wanting to fit into any sort of traditional rules – a generous amount of Zinfandel along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine gets its structure from the classic Sangiovese characteristics of dark cherry and balanced acidity. The dark fruit of the Zinfandel fills out the mid palate, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead into the long and soft finish. This wine will steal your heart!

Tasting Notes:

In Italy the term "Super Tuscan" was meant to describe any Tuscan wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws for the region. Desiring to make a richer style wine, often Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) were often added in to the final wine. Why would we want to be any different? This wine has a Sangiovese backbone – but not wanting to fit into any sort of traditional rules – we blended in a generous amount of Zinfandel along with some Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This wine gets its structure from the classic Sangiovese characteristics of dark cherry and balanced acidity. The dark fruit of the Zinfandel fills out the mid palate, and the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot lead into the long and soft finish. This wine will steal your heart!
