Sokol-Blosser Pinot Noir United States Red Pinot Noir Oregon 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Bill and Susan Sokol Blosser planted their first vines in 1971 in the Dundee Hills. Back then there was no Oregon wine industry. Now Dundee, in the heart of the Willamette Valley, is the epicentre of Oregon Pinot Noir. Sokol Blosser estate vineyards are farmed organically and should receive full USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) organic certification in 2005. Local organic straw, organic cow and horse manure, grape pomace from the crush and organic rock phosphate contribute to the composting. The insect population is kept in check by a resident flock of bluebirds. The vineyards have been certified "green" by LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology, an international certification). And the underground barrel cellar, built to US Green Building Council standards, became the first winery in the country to earn the prestigious LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The Estate Pinot Noir is a formidable wine, made from a mixture of old vineyard blocks and young vines and low yields. The wine is fermented in large open top fermenters punched down three times daily and receives the same post-fermentation maceration as the Dundee Hills. It is 100% barrel-aged (60% new, 40% once used French oak from Allier, Bertranges and Vosges oak) and is unfined and unfiltered. The fruit is rich and heady with thick black cherry and blackberry flavours and a hint of secondary earth and truffle character.

I really enjoyed this wine. It has a powerful black cherry flavor which is balanced with the nice complexity of vegetal, mushroomy, and barnyardy loveliness. It lingered pleasantly on the palate.

A rather big red. Full of dark fruit flavor. Not too sweet nor dry. Went well with lamb, steak, and salads as well. Not recommended with fruit or desserts.

Sokol Blosser has been producing stellar Pinot Noir from their Dundee Hills vineyards for over 30 years. In 2005, Dundee Hills was recognized with its own AVA within the Willamette Valley because of outstanding wines like this one with aromas of raspberry, black cherry, truffles and loam. Aged 16 months in French oak, on the palate it shows ripe berry and dusty cocoa that linger on the finish.

Classic Dundee Hills on the nose- bright cherry and strawberry preserves mixed with toasty oak, moist earth and a touch of pine. Soft on the palate, the dark red fruit dominates the mid-palate and carries through to a clean, precise finish. The wi... Alex Shaw.
