Sobon Estate Zinfandel Amador County Hillside Vineyard 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Intriguing aromas of spice, cherry, and concentrated fruit: restrained, but very complex. The multiple flavors feature a toasty, dusty cherry component so typical of the Fiddletown area. The finish is long and lingering, and invites another taste.

This wine is bright, fresh, hedonistic, and YUMMY. The nose has loads of red fruit and berry flavors with a healthy dose of vanilla. It is the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of Zinfandels. For this variety it does not deliver tannically, but is nevertheless smooth and well-balanced on the palate.

Maybe this deserves a four. This wine is a blend of Zin, Cab Sauv, Barbera, Syrah, Petite Syrah. Quality oak flavors and smooth, almost invisible tannins are surrounded by flavors from at least three or four fruits ranging from Raspberry and Cherry to cranberry. The jam-flavors are accented by a gentle peppery slap that reminds you that California blends can have some truly good flavors. This wine is a great value - each sip better than the one before.

I like spicy, fruity Zins and this one really fits the bill. Easy drinking, bold and goes well with spicy and/or grilled foods since it can holds its own.

The 2008 Old Vine is diffinitely a keeper. Slightly sweet with a lot of fruit and spice. A fun wine with complimenting flavor. The price makes it a steal. Well done!

A clean, basic red wine that's focused on standard berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Fresh but simple, with limited raspberry and cherry flavors along with a touch of vanilla. Competent but entirely regular.A thoroughly enjoyable Zinfandel that shows the variety's lusty character, but with special grace and finesse. Bone dry and richly tannic, it has complex flavors of blackberries, blueberries and currants, with earthier notes of tobacco, leather and unsweetened dark chocolate. Very fine.

Grown at the Lubenko Vineyard from head-pruned vines planted in 1910, this is an intensely concentrated, bowl-you-over zin that manages to stay in balance. There's an iron-rich soil character that keeps it savory against purple fruit, which will need time in bottle to grow more expressive. Scents of dark mushrooms, chili spice and leather all add to the complexity. Decant this several hours before dinner if you open it now, to serve with braised lamb.

This delicious Zinfandel is produced from old vines in Amador County. Flavors of cocoa and blackberries ooze from the glass, making this sturdy and bold wine an absolute joy with hard cheeses or a grilled steak.

Composed of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Grenache, this is a huge and lush red which is made of one hundred percent organically grown grapes. Plenty of blackberry and black cherry are complemented by creamy chocolate accents. A huge wine that offers tons of black raspberry fruit with the slightest hints of black pepper spice, to be enjoyed alongside grilled meats.

High-toned spices, cinnamon and a reddened thyme show the wood influence that carries through this big, burly Zin. It's a sweet, almost Porty red, balanced by tannin gripping in the heat of the finish, by flavors of blueberries in syrup set against dried scents of woodland scrub. An intriguing Foothills style to serve with braised short ribs.

The boldest, spiciest and most outspoken of the Sobon Zinfandel lineup. Excellent balance; just about exploding with black and red fruit flavors, spicy oak and black pepper. This is the kind of wine that could never feel out of place at a good old-fashioned barbecue, but also works well with steak and mushroom dishes or spicy Chinese beef, or on its own as a pick-me-up on a cold winter night.

The wine has aromas of spice, cherry and concentrated fruit. It is restrained and very complex. Enjoy with lamb, beef or pasta dishes.
