Food Pairings for Smoking Loon Zinfandel Old Vine
Well, there are two ways for me to review this wine: (1) as a Zin, or (2) As a wine in general. For me, as a Zin, this just doesn't cut it. Very savory, with bacon and smoked/cured meats tastes and the like. But maybe if someone is looking for something to mellow-out the usual Zin characteristics, this might work for them. But as a wine in general, for the price, this was pretty good. So as a Zin, I'd give it about 2-2 1/2 glasses. as a wine in general, 3 1/2. So the middle ground is about a 3.
Consider 1 that I normally pay $11 a bottle for this wine, and most decent Zins start at $18... This is my everyday Zin. No it's not as flavorful or full as more expensive Zins, but for a $11/bottle Zin it's really good. I typically use this as an everyday kind of wine. It's not something I'd pull out for a special occasion nor would I take it to a party, but it's a good inexpensive everyday wine

I'm a zin fan. Plump, fruity and old or ancient vine stuff or younger spicer higher octane libes, and I will often crave a blend if done to my likings. But here's an Old Vine that I feel doesn't really stack up to my interpretation or expectation of an Old Vine Zin. I am also more partial to SLO and SB County Zins, mainly because Napa can and does have its Cabs. Us So. Cal. boys like me need a wine pride and joy. Nevertheless, for under $8 this stuff is a screaming deal. This is one of those creations that somehow, magically disappeared upon opening. Well maybe just a little left for the next night, but on a weeknight? Oh well. But there are just too many great California Zins out there for this one to get a primetime rating, or be standard, but worth trying again if the mood swings.
External Reviews for Smoking Loon Zinfandel Old Vine
This Zinfandel pours a slightly translucent garnet in the glass with an enticing aroma of spice and mixed berry. Raspberry clove and white pepper draw you in and the interplay between fruit and spice changes and evolves on the palate a tell-tale quality of a fine wine. Spiced blackberry cobbler and rich caramel come through nicely on the initial taste. The dried fruit character on the mid-palate reveals its old vine terroir especially as the wine transitions to its gamey sweet and lightly tart finish leaving a hint of black raspberry in its wake. With the wide breadth of flavors that this wine brings to the table this sophisticated Zinfandel should please both the occasional wine drinker and the connoisseur alike.
