Smoking Loon Merlot 2009

Member Review by Nerdmom920:

This wine did not taste like a merlot at all. More like a cab sav. Dry, earthy, but with none of the spice or leather I like in a cab. Oddly, I detected no fruit. :(

Soft and easy to drink, with cherry and spice aromas and flavors mdash; and a hint of root beer mdash; plus just enough depth to keep it interesting. Drink now.

Shows much the same character as Dom Sebastiani's 2004 Pepperwood Grove Merlot, perhaps a touch more tannic, and veering more toward blackberries instead of cherries. Still it's a lovely sipper, fresh and jammy.

Has earthy, tobaccoey flavors, with notes of plum and blackberry, wrapped in sturdy tannins. Dry, with a tart finish.

This Merlot is dark garnet in color and has aromas of fresh basil, blueberries, and Bing cherries. With good richness without being too heavy on the palate, the flavors of fresh cherry pie, sweet plum, and soft cinnamon spiked cranberry dressing finishing with notes of rich, vanilla French oak and delicate cherry and strawberry flavors.
