Smith-Woodhouse Smith-Woodhouse Vintage Character Port NV

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

When Jack Frost is nipping at your nose, nothing warms the spirit like a great glass of port. There is no need to spend $60 plus and wait 30 years when this gem from Smith Woodhouse gives us medium-full body, medium sweetness and soft tannin all harmonizing to form a symphony that is a full, round, soft port. Hints of spice and plum on the nose lead to gobs of rich black fruit in the mouth. A steal of a deal and ready to enjoy tonight.

Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the most spectacular wine growing regions in the world. Its beauty is the result of many centuries of work by the river Douro itself, carving steep, towering banks into the landscape, and by the inhabitants of this region, who centuries ago undertook the nearly impossible task of planting vineyards here. Forming terraces on these rocky slopes was difficult enough, but the harsh climate and limited rainfall, characteristic of the Douro Valley, made the work of winemaking a difficult enterprise indeed. The rewards of this labor are the superb wines of the Douro, wines that have taken their place among the best in the world. Smith Woodhouse wines come from the Upper Douro, famous for its top rated production. The majority of the wines are still produced by treading the grapes by foot in stone lagares. Smith Woodhouse’s wines are largely sourced from the Madalena vineyard. This small Quinta (vineyard property) has the highest “A” quality rating and is located in the Rio Torto district, acknowledged as one of the finest Port growing areas. Over the coming years, the recently acquired Quinta do Vale Coelho, further upriver in the Douro Superior, will gradually form an important component of Smith Woodhouse’s Ports. Read less

Dark ruby color. Fruity aromas of cassis, black cherry and dried herbs. Very rich, deep and sweet, verging on raisiny. Round in the mouth, then finishes fairly dry and quite firm, with lovely vinosity. A melange of spices, raisins and nuts on the aft... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Port wine from in Portugal. N.V. Smith-Woodhouse Vintage Character Port Lodge Reserve NV 750ml

Lots of vanilla overtones join the sweet cherry and dark plum flavors. Hot spice marks the finish.

An intense, rich style aged six to eight years in cask. At this quality level, Lodge Reserve represents a tremendous value.

Black ruby color. Full-bodied. Balanced acidity. Highly extracted. Medium sweetness. Black fruits, violets. A deep attractive style with a concentrated and expansive palate. Quite full-blooded with a lingering fruity finish.

Structured wine, very perfumed, the aromas reflecting the delicious mix of black cherry, damson and spice flavors. The wine then shows strong tannins and a firm texture.
